After their involvement in the Battle of the Somme in August and September, 1916, 14th Division moved a few miles north to take over part of the front line near Arras. On 3rd October, 1916 the 8th Rifle Brigade battalion of 41 Brigade, consisting of less than 350 officers and men, left billets in Rivière and moved to the nearby front line trenches. During the relief six men were killed and another twelve wounded by one shell which landed and exploded among them. One of those killed on this day was Leonard Farr.
